Hospital security analysis

Using MEDIQ as an example

Description of the client

MEDIQ is a multi-specialist hospital that was established in 1998 and employs 250 people. It is a first choice for the inhabitants of Legionowo and a significant facility in the Mazovian Voivodeship. What is more, MEDIQ is also 2 support facilities where patients are admitted.

Until now, the IT department, consisting of a Technical Manager and 6 employees, has been responsible for the security area. Until the start of the cooperation with Sagenso, there was little opportunity to look at the state of cyber security at the facility.

The problem with hospital security

The security of medical facilities is crucial. By holding large amounts of patient data, this sector is particularly vulnerable to attacks. Moreover, despite such frequent incidents, it is the medical sector that is the least secure. Many of the systems and devices used in facilities are an easy entry point for hackers. Significant threats that can affect the operation of the entire organisation:

  • Inaccessibility of systems responsible for patient appointments
  • Leakage of personal data including highly sensitive medical data
  • Discontinuation of medical equipment
Sagenso's experts estimated the volume of ransomware that had been targeted at organisations equivalent to the size of MEDIQ. Those that already had around 300 terminal devices were facing ransom demands averaging up to PLN 1,000,000 as a result of the malware attack.
